Swedish king warns members for Academy damage

- The Swedish king Carl Gustaf has called on the members of the Swedish Academy to take their responsibility. The king says in an official statement from the court: 'The contradictions that have arisen within the Swedish Academy are very unfortunate and cause serious damage to the important activities of the Academy.'

The Academy is responsible for appointing the winner of the Nobel Prize for literature and also for publishing the Swedish dictionary and the Swedish word list. The members of the eighteen-person committee are appointed by the king for life. According to the current rules, it is not possible for members to resign or be removed from the Academy.

Nevertheless, three members of the committee resigned last week. They did so because of the relationship that academy member Katarina Frostenson would have with the head of a Swedish cultural institution. He is accused of sexual abuse. The three members demanded that Frostenson be removed. The majority did not participate, after which the three announced their departure.

According to Carl Gustaf, it is 'crucial that all those involved now realize their responsibility for the institution and contribute to resolving conflicts. 'For members of the Swedish Academy, responsibility for the institution must always be of the utmost importance,' writes the monarch.
