Swedish king adjusts statutes of the Academy

- King Carl XVI Gustaf has adapted the statutes of the Swedish Academy. The palace has informed that. The adaptation should help the Academy to return to work after eight out of eighteen members had given in to it.

The age-old Swedish Academy has been responsible since 1901 for choosing the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. That work was jeopardized by a lack of active members.

The problems surfaced when, eight months ago, eighteen women lodged a complaint of sexual abuse against Jean-Claude Arnault, husband of Academy member Katarina Frostenson. Both were involved in Kulturplats Forum, where many of the actions had taken place. Some members of the Academy felt that Forstenson had to leave, and when they initially did not, they got angry. However, departure was not possible according to the internal rules, hence the intervention of the king Carl Gustaf, who is the patron of the Swedish Academy.
