Spain wants to help Malta with migrant ship

World June 22, 2018 21:30

madrid - Spain is prepared to provide Malta with humanitarian aid for a boat sailing with more than 200 migrants on board in the vicinity of the island state. That is what a government spokeswoman in Madrid announced after the Cabinet meeting.

Italy had asked the Maltese authorities to admit the ship of the German organization Mission Lifeline to a port, but they felt nothing for it because there was no emergency situation. The Italian Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli nevertheless called that rejection reaction 'absurd' and 'inhuman'.

'We have contacted Malta to offer our support if it is needed in the coming hours,' said Isabel Celaa on behalf of the Spanish government. Spain gave another rescue vessel, the Aquarius, permission to dock in Valencia last week. Then it involved more than 600 refugees and migrants. They too were not welcome in Italy and Malta.
