cape town - South African president Jacob Zuma resigns. His party, the ANC (African National Congress), had asked him to resign.
Zuma was controversial because of a series of corruption scandals. Cyril Ramaphosa, the 65-year-old president of the ANC, is the most obvious candidate to become president of South Africa when Zuma leaves.
