'Son-in-law Trump loses access to state secrets'

World February 27, 2018 22:21

washington - Jared Kushner no longer has full access to the ultra-secret information from the White House. Both the New York Times, Politico and the BBC report this on the basis of anonymous sources. Previously, the son-in-law and right hand of President Donald Trump had access to the most sensitive intelligence from the United States security services. Now, however, a large part will be shielded for him.

Only a handful of people are allowed to view all the 'top secret' information from the United States. Jared Kushner was one of them. Now, however, these rights have been taken away from him. This means that he can no longer view various documents with sensitive information. Among other things, the 'Daily Brief', a daily secret report from the intelligence services, will now remain protected for him. Whether Kushner will still be able to perform his duties as a political advisor for his father-in-law will still have to be demonstrated.

Kushner, the husband of Trumps daughter Ivanka, is not the only one who loses unlimited access to ultra-secret information. Several employees who previously had access to the highest level, the so-called SCI level, were told in an internal memo on Friday that their status was downgraded. A lot of sensitive information from intelligence services is now being screened for them.

The decision comes during an investigation into Kushner and some other prominent figures. After all, these would unjustly gain access to the most sensitive information of the country, without the FBI first having completely screened them. That is why General John Kelly decided to prevent a new scandal in the White House and to withdraw the temporary provisional duties.

'The American people deserve a team in the White House that meets the highest standards. The employees must be carefully examined, especially those who work closely with the president and are engaged in sensitive national safety information, 'Kelly said earlier. 'We should- and will- have to do better in the future. '

Donald Trump can theoretically contradict that decision himself and his son-in-law gives full access to the secret information. On Friday, however, he said during a press conference that he did not want to interfere in the case. 'I let General Kelly make the decision', the president said. 'I am really sure that he will make the right decision. '

The decision comes in a turbulent period for son-in-law Kushner. After all, there is an investigation into him, because he would have attempted to acquire foreign financing for his real estate company during the presidential transition period in fifteen countries, including Russia.

Yet the White House says that they retain confidence in the right hand of the president. They do not want to respond to the withdrawn rights, but rather to the fact that they will still put him to work as an important part of the team. 'Jared does his job well. He is a valued member of our team and he will continue his important work, just as he has done since the very beginning ', said spokesman Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Tuesday.
