seoul - A North Korean military defected to South Korea on Thursday. According to the South Korean Ministry of Defense, it is the second defector in five weeks' time.

The soldier with a low rank suddenly surfaced around 08.00 in the morning (local time) at the strictly supervised demilitarized zone between North Korea and South Korea.

South Korean border guards would have dropped about twenty warning shots to North Korean troops looking for the defector, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.

'Today a North Korean soldier has defected through our military border post in the central western region,' said spokesman Roh Jae-cheon of the general staff. 'Our soldiers have put the man in safety and he will be interrogated to find out the background and motive of his decision. '

The South Korea's maritime police had already found two North Koreans on Wednesday floating in a small boat off the South Korean coast. The two also indicated that they wanted to run over. On 13 November, a seriously injured North Korean soldier also succeeded in reaching the South Korean border. The 24-year-old soldier was transferred to a hospital.
