Social media only get a European appointment

brussels - Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Microsoft pick up six out of ten hateful messages after notification. But only half of the reports will be reviewed within 24 hours.

The four companies signed a code of conduct with the European Commission just a year ago. Among other things, it was agreed that most notifications should be handled within 24 hours. That has just been achieved.

European Commissioner Vera Jourova (Justice) presented an evaluation of the first year on Thursday. The code of conduct must help to combat radicalization and racism. Other social media companies and online platforms have joined the initiative. Jourova thinks that it is the 'good side' but that more needs to be done.

Next week, the EU ministers of justice will meet on the subject.
