Snapchat signs code of conduct against hate speech

World May 7, 2018 15:24

- The American internet platform Snapchat adheres to the voluntary European code of conduct against hate messages, terror propaganda and other illegal messages.

With the code, the company commits to assessing and, if necessary, removing 'bad' messages, videos and photos within 24 hours. The tech company, which is especially popular among young people, will be the fifth to sign the code. Previously, Google, Facebook, Twitter and Microsoft already did that.

The voluntary approach seems to work, says the committee, because since the code was introduced in 2016, connected tech companies get rid of 70 percent of hate speech messages, the majority within 24 hours. Brussels calls for smaller companies to join the initiative.

Last month, the Committee also proposed a code of conduct against the distribution of fake news and disinformation.

Brussels is threatening with binding rules if the industry does not take sufficient measures to create a safe environment for its users.
