Slovaks demand departure police chief

World April 5, 2018 19:51

bratislava - Tens of thousands of Slovaks went up the street on Thursday to demand the departure of police chief Tibor Gaspar. It was one of the biggest demonstrations since the murder of 27-year-old investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his girlfriend at the end of February. So far no one has been indicted in connection with this case.

Although official figures from the authorities were missing, the news site Dennik N estimated that about 45,000 demonstrators had gathered in the center of Bratislava. That is a slightly smaller crowd, which last month put the pressure on Prime Minister Robert Fico so far that he resigned to save his coalition government. Fico was succeeded by his assistant Peter Pellegrini.

The protesters now demanded Gaspar's resignation and amendment of the law to ensure that someone is appointed in his place who will do a completely impartial investigation into the death of Kuciak. He wrote about corruption at the highest political level.
