bratislava - The Slovak Minister Robert Kaliňák (Home Affairs) has announced his departure. One of the coalition parties had insisted on this after the murder of journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée.

Kaliňák, an ally of Prime Minister Robert Fico, went on his knees on Monday. 'It is important to maintain stability. That is why I decided to resign as a deputy prime minister and as Minister of Home Affairs ', said the minister at a press conference. Critics argued that Kaliňák could not guarantee an independent investigation into the killings.

Kuciak investigated Italian businessmen who might have ties with the Mafia before he died. The murdered journalist has written in the past about possible tax fraud by a real estate developer who had ties with Kaliňák. The minister denied having gone outside his book.
