ndjamena - Almost fifty years after the extinction of the black rhinoceros in Chad, the reintroduction of the animals into the African country is started. Six rhinos are flown in on Thursday from South Africa to Chad to be released there in the Zakouma National Park.

The animals are anesthetized and put in reinforced crates and then flown to Chad from Port Elizabeth. The organization African Parks is in charge of the Zakouma National Park. Earlier that organization set up South African lions and rhinos in Rwanda.

No more rhinos live in any other country in the world than in South Africa. The population consists of 18,000 white rhinos and 2000 black rhinos. That is why South African animals are often used for reintroduction in other countries. In Chad, rhinos have not been seen in the wild since the beginning of the 1970s.
