Shutdown affects hundreds of thousands of civil servants

washington - The so-called shutdown of the American government has consequences for hundreds of thousands of civil servants. Approximately 380,000 employees of nine departments have been sent home and are not being paid.

Another 420,000 civil servants work for services that are not allowed to resign, such as customs or mail. They must continue to work unpaid, although they still receive that salary if the shutdown is averted.
