Senators VS want to protect 'dreamers' against expulsion

washington - Two American senators, the Republican John McCain and the Democrat Chris Coons, have presented a compromise proposal on Monday to protect the so-called 'dreamers' against expulsion.

It concerns about 700,000 immigrants who came illegally to the US as a young child and have now become fully established. Part of the plan is also a better security of the American southern border.

President Donald Trump wants to meet dreamers only when he gets money for the construction of a wall between the US and Mexico. A previous bill by Dick Durbin (D) and Lindsey Graham (R) was rejected last month by the White House. This new proposal does not seem to have much chance either.

Durbin could live with it because it is more nuanced than the demarcated version that Trump launched in January. There were the Democrats and principled Republicans against it. The McCain-Coons plan is not a thorough overhaul of the immigration system and does not include a budget for the wall, but offers dreamers a future in the US and also improves border surveillance by methods other than the construction of concrete and fences alone.
