madhyam gram - A 45-year-old scooter driver was beaten to death by a group of traffic enforcement officials in the Indian city of Madhyamgram on Saturday because he did not wear a helmet. The victim would have refused to pay a bribe as a fine.

Various traffic enforcers beat and kicked the man, Soumen Debnath, until he was unconscious. He died on his way to the hospital, according to The Times of India.

Traffic controller Soumen Roy, the main suspect, has been arrested. In addition, two volunteers would also have abused Debnath. It is not yet clear whether these two have been detained.

The locals became furious when they heard about the incident. People took to the streets to go after the traffic enforcement officers.

Some volunteers climbed on buildings to escape the angry crowd. Agents who came to repair order were pelted with stones.

The wife of Soumen Debnath, Kakali, lost consciousness when she heard that her husband had been beaten to death. His daughter Megha and Sneha were in shock.

The traffic enforcement department is temporarily closed due to the incident. According to sources from The Times of India, an investigation is being made.
