Saudi Arabia continues Shiites for spying

World February 22, 2016 07:28

- Saudi Arabia continues 32 Shiites on charges of spying for Iran, have Saudi newspapers and the television station al-Arabiya reported Monday.

Among them are an Iranian and an Afghan. The others are all Saudis, some of whom claimed Saudi Shiites are prominent members of their community and not engage in politics.

The suspects were arrested in 2013. They are among others accused of setting up a spy network with members of the Iranian intelligence service. They would have passed military secrets, have wanted to sabotage Saudi economic interests, have sought to undermine social cohesion and inciting sectarian strife.

The trial is expected to further increase tensions between the Sunni kingdom and Shiite Iran.
