Russian bombers intercepted at the coast

leeuwarden - For the west coast of the Netherlands, Belgian F-16s intercepted two Russian bombers this morning. It was TU-160 Blackjacks. They flew in international airspace, but were intercepted for security reasons.

The planes flew near the Wadden Islands. After the action, the Belgian aircraft refueled at the air base Leeuwarden, which, like the Belgian Air Force, reported the interception on the official twitter account.

Belgium and the Netherlands together guard the airspace. This morning's action was carried out in the context of this so-called Benelux Quick Reaction Alert (QRA). In the neighborhood are also Dutch aircraft, but Belgium was 'on the turn'.

Because the Belgian aircraft went through the sound barrier, a blast could be heard in the east of the country.
