boulder - A group of international scientists has discovered an enormous icy abyss under the ice of Antarctica. They speak of a 1 100-kilometer gap. No ravine on earth is so big, reports the journal Geology, the journal of the prestigious Geological Society of America.

Using include satellite and radar, the researchers are working to determine the dimensions of the colossal ravine. It is very likely that the icy abyss is wider than the famous Grand Canyon in the United States, which is about 30 kilometers wide at its widest point. This gap in the state of Arizona has approximately 70 million years old. The length of the Grand Canyon is approximately 435 kilometers.

The gap beneath the south pole strikes the researchers everything. Later this year, they present the exact dimensions of the icy abyss, which is located below the area that is known as Princess Elizabeth Land.
