Republicans Senate: child belongs to parents

washington - All Republicans in the US Senate want to keep migrant families together while their status is being determined. The leader of the Republicans in the Senate Mitch McConnell announced on Tuesday that they are working on a solution for separating children from their parents. That should then be laid down in new legislation.

Since the entry into force of stricter rules in mid-April, nearly 2,000 children were separated from their parents after the families had illegally crossed the border with the US from Mexico. Because the adults are arrested in anticipation of their criminal case, the children are accommodated elsewhere. At home and abroad a storm of criticism erupted about the separation of parents and children.

'I think we have to solve this, we have to come together and solve this,' McConnell said to the Democrats. Number two within the group John Cornyn said the goal was to resolve the issue within a few days.

The leader of the Democrats in the Senate rejected new legislation. According to Chuck Schumer, that is 'not the way to go' because Trump can simply change his policy.

The Republicans have a small majority of 51 against 49 in the Senate. Sixty votes are required for new legislation.
