madaya - The United Nations and the Red Cross hope to deliver Sunday supplies to the population in the places Madaya, al-Foua and Kefraya in western Syria. In Madaya are 40,000 residents trapped half a year by the Syrian army and the Lebanese ally Hezbollah. In the more northerly places al-Foua Kefraya and 20,000 people are held hostage by fighters of the opposition.

There is particularly urgent need for medicines and baby food because mothers because of hunger not breastfeed. The last time these places by aid agencies could be achieved was in October.

Since December 1 in 23 people in Madaya centers MSF died of starvation. The auxiliary supply is complicated because aid convoys enemy lines to cut through. Blockades and kidnappings are a proven tactic of the warring parties, which the population is forced to surrender or die of starvation. The now nearly five-year civil war in Syria has claimed some 250.000 lives.
