Regulation whistleblowers slaughterhouses Belgium

brussels - There will be a whistleblowing scheme for slaughterhouses in Belgium. The scheme protects slaughterhouse workers against sanctions if they report a violation of animal welfare to the government. This was announced by Minister Ben Weyts (Animal Welfare) in the Flemish Parliament when discussing a study into violations in the sector.

Weyts ordered the slaughterhouses after a number of scandals last year, including in a pig slaughterhouse in Tielt that had to close temporarily after secretly cases of heavy animal cruelty were filmed. In addition, there is a legal basis for using camera images as evidence.

The researchers found no major or systematic violations of animal welfare but saw shortcomings at every stage of the processing process. In seven of the eleven cattle slaughterhouses visited, not all animals fell outside consciousness at the first shot. In all slaughterhouses, an electrical device was used to propel cattle, while the use of power surges was only allowed as a last resort.
