Premier St. Maarten: Request Military Assistance Hurricane Irma

World September 2, 2017 17:51

philipsburg - William Marlin, Prime Minister of St. Maarten, has asked the Dutch Ministry of Defense to provide military assistance regarding the imminent Hurricane Irma. This is purely a precautionary measure, as there is no immediate threat to this.

Irma was about 2,000 kilometers from the Leeward Islands on Friday and received category 3 and is therefore considered to be 'very dangerous'. Currently there is no immediate threat to St. Maarten, because Saturday afternoon the hurricane was scaled in category 2.

The hurricane moved this morning in the west-north direction and is expected to be an intense hurricane of the third or fourth category in the coming days.

For the time being, this hurricane does not pose any threat to any territory, but next week it can be a serious threat to the northeastern Caribbean region.

Marlin would like to scale up to 40 additional marines, he informed by statement. He wants to prepare himself well and does not get behind the facts if Irma is on the doorstep.
