vatican city - Pope Francis has called officials at the Vatican and bishops around the world to lead a simple life after retirement and to abandon the desire for power.
In recent years several Catholic dignitaries have come under fire because they have a luxurious life and for example escorted by the police.
Francis himself lives in a simple suite in a guest house of the Vatican, instead of in the luxurious rooms that are meant for the pope.
The new instructions are in a papal law with the title 'Learning to resign'. Anyone who leaves the office must 'embrace a new life that is marked as much as possible by austerity, humility, prayer, reading and the willingness to perform simple pastoral services'.
