Polish Prime Minister under attack in EU parliament

World July 4, 2018 11:12

strasbourg - The Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has been heavily criticized in the European Parliament about the threatened rule of law in the country. Morawiecki defended his government just as fiercely. 'Every country has the right to form its own legal system.'

He was in Strasbourg to share his vision on the future of the EU, as previously Prime Minister Mark Rutte and other government leaders did. Morawiecki spoke mainly about the economic importance of the EU, but the MEPs did not.

While outside was argued against a new law that allows 40 percent of the judges of the Polish Supreme Court to be dismissed, leaders of political groups attacked Morawiecki.

'The democratic controls and guarantees are being destroyed in Poland,' said Guy Verhofstadt (liberals). Udo Bullmann (Social Democrats) spoke of the 'dismantling of democracy. 'They called him to repent.
