Forbes describes, on the basis of a report from a forensic specialist from the FBI, an attempt by the police to unlock an iPhone with a finger of a murdered suspect. That did not work, however, because the device needed an access code upon awakening.

Various sources confirm to Forbes that it is relatively common that this way attempts to unlock iPhones. This would happen to the local and federal police of New York and Ohio.

Getting access to iPhones with the fingers of killing is not illegal. No search warrant is required and according to US law there is no privacy violation. Also, there is no need to use expensive hack companies like Cellebrite that crack a lot of money iPhones.
