orissa - The police in India are diligently looking for the monkey that stole a baby in Orissa. The child's body was later found lifeless in a well.

The mother of the baby saw the theft- in her home- happen in front of her, but unfortunately it could not occur. According to the police, it is 'a very unusual thing', although the monkeys in that region are known for destroying 'things'.

A family member finally found the dead body in a well behind a house, a day after he was stolen by the monkey. The animal had stolen the child from the house. 'We hope we can catch the monkey within the week,' police officer PC Pradhan tells BBC.

He continues: 'Monkeys who attack people, or even penetrate houses, that seldom happens. This is even the very first thing that one has taken a baby. '

A doctor who examined the deceased child could not find any serious injuries. The baby eventually died from suffocation because he drowned in the pit. It is suggested by residents that the monkey has dropped the child on the way.
