manila - In the east of the Philippines off the coast of Dinahican, a ferry was sunk Thursday with 251 passengers on board. A local radio station reported three deaths.

According to a Coast Guard spokesman, relief workers have saved at least a hundred people on board. An unknown number has been injured.

It is unclear how many people are still missing and what is the cause of the accident. The ferry was not overcrowded. However, it was bad weather with high waves. The region was plagued last weekend by the tropical storm Kai-Tak, which killed dozens of people.
