- The commercial heart of the Chinese capital Beijing sinks, literally. Satellite images have revealed that the bottom of the Chaoyang district in the center annually up to 11 centimeters falling. The reason is the endless pumping of groundwater.

The compilers of the Chinese study of the subsidence warn that the safety of the 20 million inhabitants city is at stake. The scientists, mostly geologists, currently, the impact identified. For one thing, they have been warned, that walk the paths of high-speed trains in Beijing danger. These trains are of great importance for the commuter traffic.

Other large cities have elsewhere in the world the same problems by pumping of groundwater. Parts of Mexico City annually descend even 28 centimeters and Bangkok and Jakarta bags rapidly.
