latem - An ambulance driver has left a patient in Belgium in his ambulance. The man had fled in panic because of a collision, the television channel VTM reported on Sunday. The police picked it up later.

The driver of a commercial patient transport company had picked up a young woman in the hospital of Leuven on Friday. He hit the barrier on departure and damaged the front of his ambulance. The man would then have panicked and eventually stopped his vehicle. He took his legs and left the patient behind.

The parents of the girl sounded alarm when their daughter did not come home. 'Through our track and trace system, we saw that our ambulance stalled at Latem,' said Ambulance Luc, CEO of VTM. He called in the police, who tracked the driver. He was still in the vicinity of the ambulance.

A police spokeswoman said that the man is struggling with psychological problems. 'He was not under the influence of alcohol. 'The ambulance company has still brought the patient home.
