- A major outbreak of the mosquito-borne zikavirus in the United States, according to health officials unlikely, ABC news reported Friday.

The virus will not spread rapidly to the US, says director Anthony Fauci of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He added however added that the institute does not take lightly the issue. Fauci: What we do is prepare for a major outbreak, but in reality we think it will not come to that.

As far as is known in the United States, up to now a known contamination case.

Especially in Brazil the problem is urgent. In the South American country have certainly 3893 suspected cases were reported, more than thirty times in a year since 2010. But also in other countries in Central and South America, the virus has already surfaced.

The zikavirus is spread by a mosquito bite. Pregnant women are most at risk because the virus can lead to serious defects in newborns.

The World Health Organization is Monday at an emergency meeting to determine whether the spread of the zikavirus serves as a so-called global emergency.
