World April 21, 2018 16:12

managua - Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has sent the army to the city of Estelí to suppress the social unrest. During protests in several cities against the reform of the social system, at least ten people have died in the last few days and around one hundred wounded.

The riots broke out in the capital Managua and about 185 kilometers southeast of it in Estelí. The Spanish newspaper El País reports that in Estelí there were harsh confrontations between public troops and demonstrators. With the support of the police, the army dispersed the demonstrators in Estelí.

The disturbances broke out on Wednesday. Pensioners took to the streets because the government wants to stave off pensions and increase employees' contributions to social security. More and more Nicaraguans, including thousands of students, joined the protests in recent days.

Ortega wants to negotiate with the demonstrators about ending the protest.
