jerevan - The Armenian parliament has elected opposition leader Nikol Pasjinjian as a new prime minister in a second round. He was the only candidate. Pasjinjian received 59 votes in favor and 42 against.

Last week, Pasjinjian (42) did not get a majority in a vote because the ruling Republican Party did not support him. He then called his supporters to lay flat on the capital. On Wednesday, activists took to the streets en masse to block access roads to the capital Yerevan. Both the Armenian president and the temporary prime minister called on the parties to consult on a solution to the political crisis. Some of the Republican Party now supported him.

Pasjinjian was one of the driving forces behind the protests against Serzh Sarkisian, who was Prime Minister of the former Soviet Republic for ten years. Following the protests, Sarkisian announced his departure two weeks ago.
