Opening of the Jerusalem embassy without Trump
jerusalem - President Donald Trump is the big absent Monday at the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem. He is represented at the ceremony by a delegation with, among others, his daughter Ivanka and his son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Minister of Finance Steven Mnuchin and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs John Sullivan are also part of the delegation. According to US government officials, Donald Trump will give a speech via a video link.
The recent decision of Trump to relocate the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem has received a lot of criticism. Especially the Palestinians are angry. They see East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.
The opening of the embassy in Jerusalem is the day the Palestinians commemorate 'Nakba' (the Catastrophe). With that they refer to the declaration of the state of Israel seventy years ago. For hundreds of thousands of Palestinians this meant that they fled their homeland or were expelled from it.
