antwerp - In the Antwerp Zoo is an okapi born. The birth of the closest living relative of the giraffe is important because the okapi is threatened with extinction. Antwerp Zoo coordinates the European breeding program for this species and manages the studbook to safeguard the survival of the species.
After fourteen months, the okapi was born two weeks ago. The girl was given the name Qira, which means sun, so did Antwerp Zoo on Tuesday. The public will have to wait before they can admire Qira. Unless it is still exceptionally warm, the winter months, it remains young with her parents in the stable.
The okapi is in the wild in Congo.
