Nuclear power station Purpose shut down due to leakage

World April 28, 2018 14:15

beveren - The Belgian nuclear power station Doel 1 has been shut down this week due to a leak in the nuclear part. The reactor was switched off unexpectedly on Monday. This was necessary for maintenance work at the height of the cooling water, which was then still the explanation. Now operator Engie Electrabel has confirmed to TV East that it was a leak.

The leak was discovered in the cooling system of the reactor, near the Dutch border near Antwerp. This should prevent a so-called 'meltdown' where the reactor overheats. According to the manager of the plant, there is no danger for local residents.

The repair is difficult because the radioactive radiation in the part of the plant with the leak is very large. The nuclear power plant, which was commissioned in 1975, would go out for maintenance from 29 May to 1 October. That has now been brought forward by the circumstances. The target date for completion remains 1 October.
