rome - The Italian coast guard on Thursday nearly nine hundred asylum seekers, mostly Syrians rescued from two boats for the coast of Sicily. Which announced a spokesman for the coastguard. The boats were not left Libya- the usual starting point for boat trips to Italy- but from Egypt.
From one boat 515 people were removed, the other another 380. In addition Syrians were also Iraqis in the boats. According to UN refugee agency UNHCR, it is the largest crossing in a time in over a year.
