New Prime Minister Italy wants fairer Europe

rome - In his first speech to parliamentarians, the new Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte stressed that his government does have a different policy for Europe, but certainly does not want to leave. 'Europe is our home, the house for everyone, we must strive for a stronger and fairer Europe,' said Conte, a 53-year-old lawyer with no political background.

'Our aim is to eliminate the difference between economic growth in the EU and Italy, but this must be pursued within the framework of financial stability and market confidence,' Conte said.

He was flanked in the Senate by the winners of the March 4 elections; the leader of the Eurosceptic protest party M5S (Five Star Movement) Luigi Di Maio and by the Matteo Salvini, leader of the radical right-wing Populists of the Lega. In both populist movements the problems of the EU or 'the German currency', the euro, are often blamed.
