After taking office, Tokayev immediately proposed to name the city with around 800,000 inhabitants after its predecessor. The name change did not take long afterwards. The parliament gave the green light later in the day. 'Astana has now been officially renamed Nursultan,' reported state news agency Kazinform after the vote.
