- In addition to repeated volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, Hawaiians are faced with another danger: 'laze'.

When the hot lava from the mountains reaches the Pacific Ocean, it comes into contact with seawater. A series of chemical reactions then creates a white smoke plume above the sea, a phenomenon that is called 'laze' in English (lava haze).

This cloud brings hydrochloric acid and steam into the air with small glass particles. The chemicals are dangerous for people, experts warn the residents of Hawaii. It causes irritation to the eyes, respiratory tract and skin.

'Laze' has the same corrosive properties as dilute battery acid, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS) and has killed people in the past.
