brussels - NATO allies are willing to remain present with troops in Afghanistan after 2017.

That's what the alliance defense ministers decided Wednesday. This also increases the likelihood that President Barack Obama has withdrawn its intention to reduce the number of US troops there next year from 9800 to 5500.

US Secretary Ashton Carter was pleased with the NATO decision. According to him, the decision to reduce the US presence still standing, but Obama will later this year take a final decision. That the partners want to maintain their training mission in Afghanistan will play an important role.
