N Korea allows plutonium again

World June 6, 2016 20:03

- Satellite images suggest that North Korea again produces plutonium, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in Vienna Monday. Production takes place at the Yongbyon nuclear research complex, where dangerous plutonium is extracted from spent fuel rods from a nuclear reactor.

The IAEA, the nuclear watchdog of the United Nations, can not carry out inspections on its own in the nuclear facilities of North Korea. It is therefore reliant on satellite images. The IAEA already saw signs of renewed activity at Yongbyon last year.

North Korea has held four nuclear tests since 2006, the last in January. It is believed that while plutonium was used which was won at Yongbyon. Little is known about the quantities of plutonium or highly enriched uranium, which holds North Korea.
