More than 130,000 Muscovites celebrate May 1

moscow - In the Russian capital Moscow more than 130,000 people have taken to the streets for the traditional trade union parade on 1 May, the Labor Day. With slogans such as 'For a fairer social policy' and 'Care for the elderly', the Muscovites, led by mayor Sergei Sobjanin, marched to the Red Square.

According to the trade union, about 3 million Russians participated in the 4000 parades throughout the country.

'I will do everything I can to improve the life of ordinary Muscovites and make the city flourish,' Sobjanin said according to the Russian news agency Interfax. He promised higher benefits for war veterans and pensioners and to invest in education and health care. In the autumn the politician wants to be elected for a second term of office. Many Russians have suffered from inflation, pay cuts and redundancies in recent years.

Some 3500 people are participating in the capital on the traditional march of the Russian Communist Party, according to news agency TASS.
