brussels - The European Union is going to spend more aid money intended for humanitarian crises on education. In 2016 it was 4 percent of the budget, this year 8 and next year 10 percent.

With the 265 million euros spent on the past six years, 5.5 million children were reached in 52 countries. Children who are victims of a humanitarian crisis must be taught again within three months is another objective presented by the European Commission on Friday.

'The EU is taking the lead worldwide to get children back to school,' said Commissioner Christos Stylianides (Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management). 'It is our duty to ensure that no lost generations arise. We will not rest before we reach these goals. '

The largest EU program for education in emergency situations is in Turkey. Returned parents receive money on the condition that their children go to school. 290,000 children make use of the program worth € 84 million.

Worldwide, 3 percent of humanitarian aid goes to educational projects.
