Mogherini warned Erdogan about referendum

strasbourg - The European Commission has 'serious concerns' about the power that the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to himself hopes to attract in the referendum on April 16. EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini warns that the candidate country Turkey will be re-evaluated if the people vote for the amendment.

Mogherini thereby responding to a critical report by constitutional experts of the Council of Europe published Monday in Strasbourg. In it they warn that the proposed changes 'a dangerous step backwards' would be for Turkish democracy and the independence of the judiciary.

EU commissioner urges Ankara to take heed recommendations of the Council of Europe. Turkey is one of the 47 members of the organization for the promotion of democracy and human rights.
