Million dead Wikipedia links fixed it

- More than a million dead links on the English Wikipedia to work thanks to a partnership with the Internet Archive and the Wikimedia Foundation. They now refer rather to a page that no longer exists a copy in the Wayback Machine. This is done with automated software, Wikimedia announced in a blog post.

When links are found that give a 404 error code or the message 'page not found', they are changed into a link to the relevant page in the Internet Archive. So citations can be kept intact. The link will also be notified that it is a page from the Wayback Machine. That had to be done manually so far.

The technique is as yet applied only to the English version of the online encyclopedia. In time, it should also work on the nearly three hundred different language Wikipedias.
