- The Mexican government on Friday approved the extradition of drug lord Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzmán to the United States to face trial. The Foreign Ministry said that it has obtained assurances from the US that the death penalty will not be sought against Guzmán.
Earlier, a Mexican judge already gave its consent to the extradition. It is not known if that happens. The Mexican authorities Guzmán, some weeks ago transferred to a maximum security prison in Ciudad Juarez near the US border.
Guzmán was arrested again in January, after being escaped in July 2015 from a high-security prison.
