Merkel wants European 'asylum summit' on Sunday

World June 20, 2018 11:00

berlin - The German Chancellor Angela Merkel wants to hold an informal 'asylum summit' in Brussels on Sunday with EU countries that have a lot to do with migrants. She wants Bulgaria, Germany, France, Greece, Italy, Austria and Spain to join in to discuss this issue before the European summit on 28 and 29 June.

Merkel is under great pressure in German politics to come up with a European migration policy before the end of the month in order to control the migrant flow.

The conservative, Bavarian wing of the Christian Democrats in Germany threatened migration policy with a break with Merkel and thus a government crisis. If Europe does not come up with a common approach quickly, Germany would have to start sending migrants at the border in July. Merkel absolutely does not want that and is committed to European approach.
