Merkel suddenly pushes Saarlandse forward

World February 19, 2018 12:24

berlin - Chancellor Angela Merkel wants the popular Prime Minister of Saarland, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, to come to Berlin and send her CDU (Christian Democratic Union) as Secretary General of the party. Merkel suddenly put Kramp-Karrenbauer forward on Monday, reported German media.

The 55-year-old Kramp-Karrenbauer, who is also referred to as AKK for convenience by German media, could possibly be prepared in this role to succeed the 63-year-old Merkel at the top of the country's largest party. The place that Kramp-Karrenbauer would fill is free because of the departure of Peter Taube (43) for health reasons.

Merkel himself also came to the top via the post general secretary general. That was when the then CEO of the CDU, Party Chairman Wolfgang Schäuble, had been politically at the beginning of 2000 as a result of a party funding scandal.

Merkel became Chancellor in 2005. She hopes to reign four years in a new coalition within the foreseeable future. That is expected to be her last reign.
