budapest - Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets of Budapest in the Hungarian capital on Saturday to protest the government's control over the media. The protesters wrote on Facebook that the Hungarian state media have turned into a propaganda machine for Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

The Fidesz party of Orbán was the big winner of the parliamentary elections two weeks ago. As a result, a fourth term was secured for him as prime minister.

The activists came together at the parliament building. They waved flags of Hungary and the European Union. Then they started a march to one of the bridges over the Danube. 'They were carrying banners with texts such as 'Viktor give us back democracy' and 'we want press freedom'.

According to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the opposition parties did not have the same opportunities in the ballot box as the government parties. The organization said that the media's freedoms were limited, partly due to recent legislative changes.

The Hungary-Rapporteur of the European Parliament, Judith Sargentini, GroenLinks noted after a small year of research that in the Eastern European country there is a systematic threat to democracy, the rule of law and fundamental freedoms.
