kirkuk - In the Iraqi province of Kirkuk, mass graves have been discovered from hundreds of civilians executed by Islamic State (IS). That was reported by Iraqi authorities at a press conference on Saturday, where CNN was also present.

The press meeting was held at the discovered mass grave in the Al-Bakara area, just above the city of Hawija. That region was in US hands for 2011. 'We are at the place where four hundred civilians have been dragged and barbarized by IS,' said Governor Kirkuk Rakan Saeed.

The governor has asked the Iraqi government and a human rights commission to come to the mass graves (five in total) to identify the bodies with DNA tests.

The oily area Kirkuk, in northern Iraq, was taken in 2014 by IS. Kurdish troops expelled IS later away from the area and refused to leave the area. Iraqi government forces took over the area in October.
