Mandatory targets for recycling in EU countries

strasbourg - EU Member States are obliged to set themselves sharper targets for re-use, recycling and waste reduction and waste. The European Parliament voted in favor of the necessary legislation on Wednesday, which had already reached a political agreement in December.

70 percent of packaging material must be recycled by 2030. In 2025, 55 percent of household waste must be reused or composted (now that is 44 percent) and by 2035 65 percent. Then only 10 percent may be taken to a landfill. Now that is on average a third.

In the switch to a circular economy, waste incineration must be strongly reduced. Furthermore, biodegradable waste must be collected separately at the end of 2023 throughout the EU. The aim is to halve food waste, now 90 million tons per year, by 2050. In 2030 it should be almost a third less.

The Netherlands is already doing relatively well in the area of the circular economy and has already achieved many of its objectives or is within reach.
